Ep. 3 – REBECCA’S STUDIO
The third episode of SQUARE METERS features French painter Rebecca Brodskis. Talking about the employment of an old Renaissance technique to prime the canvases, passing by the encounters she has during her daily commutes, to finish with the imminent relocation to Marseille to seek new vibrant inspirations, Rebecca lets us peek into her creative mind. This episode has been recorded at her atelier located at 6B in Saint-Denis, France.
Born in France in 1988, Rebecca’s childhood was spent mostly traveling around the world. Her nomadic lifestyle has greatly influenced her practice, which led her to a deep fascination for human beings. To a certain extent, being a nomad allows Rebecca to enrich her personal catalog of faces and bodies, which resurface like ghosts of memory within her paintings.
While in her studio, Rebecca follows her instinct. Without thinking too much, her brush moves on the raw surface of the linen canvas, shaping light compositions of figures that fit harmoniously together. Sometimes the desire to sit down and paint is so strong that the artist forgets the surrounding space, letting the fragments of faces she met on the street guiding her.
In fact, for Rebecca the best source of inspiration comes from the people she meets while traveling, no matter the final destination. Fascinated by those random encounters, after studying painting at Beaux-Arts of Paris and at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in London, she completed a Master’s degree in sociology on the themes of vulnerability and social crisis.
Today, Rebecca is leaving her messy studio that she shared with another artist. By moving to the south of France, she hope to find a new trilled environment where to produce and develop her practice.
