«Space is the place of the work of art, but it is not enough to say that it takes place, because in reality it treats it according to its needs, defines it and creates it as it is necessary.» – Henri Focillon
Rethinking the gallery space as a place of artistic creation is the main mission of the annual artist in residence program called THE ROOM.
The art gallery, notoriously used for the presentation and sale of artworks, is transformed into a place of research and creation. The space, thus transformed, partially loses its original function and it becomes essential to the artistic production. On the other hand, the artist, supposedly a free component within this new space, actively contributes to the metamorphosis of the gallery in his/her workspace.
THE ROOM is the place of the Uncanny, which breaks into the space and tears it, subverting its connotations. The gallery temporarily changes its condition, as well as its intimate essence. While the artist, orchestrating this disconcerting farce through a phase of creation and production, becomes cause and symptom of the metamorphosis of space.
The selected artist will engage from 3 to 4 weeks in the gallery space, taking advantage of the program to develop something new. At the end of the residency, the gallery promotes the artist’s work by co-organizing a temporary exhibition of 2 weeks minimum.
