The Red Room

The Red Room is a sound art compilation featuring works by Carl Stone, Hannah Archambault, Peter Veliks (Telepathic Nomads) and Mr. Troy.
Starting from the concept of the soundscape as a physical environment and a way of perceiving it (R. Murray Schafer, 1977), we asked international sound artists and musicians to compose two tracks from raw sounds recorded in the city of Paris.
All artists, regardless of location, worked on the same recording to deliver their personal interpretation of the initial soundscape. From Paris, Sydney or Tokyo, they explored the relationship between sound and space through the traces of a near or distant urban scenery.
The visual dimension of the project reflects those aspects: without being entirely plunged into darkness, The Red Room is pervaded by a dream-like red glow as the only enduring characteristic of this endlessly changing room.
“ Visually responding to The Red Room’s core ideas provided an opportunity to create a ghostly vision of the outside world, where rooms, bodies, cities, and distant landscapes collapse into a single mysterious experience.
While the Red Room project explores the relationship between sound and space, these visuals respond to this idea through navigating the sensory experience of interior and exterior. This appeals to the viewer/listener’s senses to distort our perception of landscape, body, and interior space as separate states of being, and allows them space to reflect through the dark and shifting images - giving power to the unknowable magic of sense and space.
While the visuals were created in silence, it is my hope that they support the sounds in grasping at the dark and undefinable possibilities of experience.”
